A creative Year 7 pupil from John Taylor Free School in Branston called Lizzie has been raising money for YMCA Burton by making and selling bright and beautiful cards for her friends, family and neighbours.
Lizzie Hasdell first became interested in the work of YMCA Burton after her mum donated food to their foodbank via the Burton Belles W.I group. After learning about the volume of people who use the foodbank, Lizzie decided to use her lockdown period to help.
The cards Lizzie made raised enough money to make up at least ten emergency foodbank bags. Not content with that effort, Lizzie posted a note through all of her neighbours doors asking if they could donate an item to the foodbank. The response was incredible and Lizzie had to borrow a wheelbarrow to collect all the donations.
Lizzie said: “It was amazing to collect the food from everyone in Severn Close, I didn’t expect this much and it’s great to be part of such a fabulous community”.
YMCA Burton fundraising officer Paula Senior said; “It has been wonderful to see Lizzies efforts to support our foodbank. She has shown determination to help others and in doing so has inspired her neighbours, family and friends who have supported her with buying cards, donating money and food items. Our foodbank is here for the community and it’s lovely that Lizzie and her family chose YMCA Burton as a community charity to support. Thank you to everyone who has helped too”.
