On Friday 6th November we held our annual Sleepout. True to 2020, the event had to be changed in order to comply with Covid19 restrictions and so it became our first virtual event.
People and their pets were invited to spend a night, sleeping in or out to raise awareness and sponsorship for our charity.
130 Participants took part by sleeping on their sofa’s, kitchen floors, gardens and even in a cave!
The youngest participant was India Bowman who slept in the garden with her family. Ray Cooper, who at 90 years old was the oldest person to participate by sleeping in his garden with his son John and their dog Buddy.
The Sleepout was accompanied by a live-stream event by Scorpion Event Solutions which aimed to keep people connected despite the pandemic and featured music from Chris Baldwin, a poetry reading by Tom Miller, speeches by President Ben Robinson and CEO Paul Laffey, a moving video tribute to our late colleague Sean Killion, a quiz by Michaela Gladwin and finally a bedtime story read by Peter O’Reilly.
Now all the sponsorship money has been handed in and counted we can reveal we raised £40,621! This will go towards keeping the essential services running at YMCA Burton.
Fundraising officer Paula Senior said: “We are totally humbled by the support received for our 12th Sleepout, and first ever virtual event. This year has been challenging for all of us and we had no idea how many people would join us with the changes we had to make to Sleepout. Thank you to everyone who gave up their bed for the night, donated, shared our story and supported us in some way to reach the outstanding amount raised. We couldn’t do this without you”.
Here at YMCA Burton we will be moving onto our Christmas Campaign very soon, to help support this see our home page.
